PROVINCE OF CURICÓ

The province of Curicó is located in the Republic of Chile (South America), at the Seventh Region, also called The Maule's Region, between the Teno and Claro rivers. (80º70'W y 30º40'S) The region is called Maule, because this river was the natural south border of the Inca's Empire.

The Province is administrative divided into 9 districts: Curicó (the province's capital cityl), Molina, Teno, Romeral, Sagrada Familia, Rauco, Huala?é, Licantén and Vichuquén.

The whole province has nearly 180,000 inhabitants, and the capital city Curicó, nearly 90,000 inhabitants.

The Province's Day is on August 26th.

 

CURICO: The City where no one is foreigner

As told, the capital city of the Province is Curicó ( Curi= black, co= water) - the black waters land- , was founded in 1743 by Governator Manso de Velasco with the name of "San José de Buena Vista de Curicó". In 1747 Governator Domingo Ortiz de Rozas dicided to move it about 5 kilometers north, where it is now located, because of the big humity that existed where it was first located.

It's located 192 Kilometers south from Santiago, Chile's Capital city, and it's the northern door of Seventh Region.

You can reached to it by bus, by train or by car, using the Americas Highway.

The main economic activities ar wines, export of fruits, wood and tourism. 

The Curicó's Foundational Anniversary is on October 9th.

The most usually visited places are Condell Hill, Plaza de Armas, the churchesSantuario del Carmen and San Francisco, and the winyards of San Pedro and Miguel Torres.-

The Plaza de Armas (Main Square) is the most visited public place, and now is "typical tourism zone" because of its 60 palmtrees and exoctics plants. There are a steel "kiosko" which is historical and cultural monument. Around Plaza de Armas, is located the Mayor's House, the Governator's House, the Main Church last destroyed by an earthquake, and the local nearly 100 years old newspapers called La Prensa , and many banks.

The Condell's Hill is located northeast from Curicó'sdowntown, at Manso de Velasco Avenue. From that hill, the whole city may be seen. Just in front of the Hill's entrance there's a big and really visited park.

Curicó is famous for its cakes, know as "tortas curicanas", which is a cake with milk sweet. But lately Curicó is being known by its "Wine Festival" , that occurs every march. All the wine procuders try to win at the "Best of the Year wine", but the most wonderfull thing is, that you can taste all of them....

Curicó's climate is very extreme, from -7ºC ( 40ºF) in winter till 35ºC (95ºF) in summer, and durinf the year we have high humidity.

The Province of Curicó, consists in 9 Municipalities: Molina, Romeral, Teno, Rauco, Hualañé, Licantén ,Vichuquén and of course Curicó.

Each one of them has a big quantities of places for tourism. The most famous are:

  • Los Queñes (Romeral), village at Los Andes Mountains, located about 48 kms. northeast from Curicó It's perfect to go fishing, on excursions, shutting and rafting on the Teno river, in kajaks

  • Radal-7 Tazas (Molina) places in the mountains, located about 60 kms. southeast from Curicó, famous place because of its seven waterfalls, one of them with 50 meters high fall.

  • Laguna de Torca (Vichuquén) a protected natural area where you can find the black neck swans.

  • Lago de Vichuquén ( Vichuquén) close to one of the most old village in Chile, is located 119 kilometers to the west of Curicó, near the seashore. It's an excelent place for water sports.

  • Iloca (Licantén) balnerary located about 120 kilometers to the west from Curicó, is known by its' seafruits and fishes, but also for its' wide beaches of black sands.

Nearby  Curicó, exist "llamas", a special animal now planning to be set gain in central Chile.
Luis Cruz Martínez,  a teenager heroe dead during the  La Concepción Battle (Perú) against the Peruvian- Bolivian Confederation (1879-1882). He is considerated as an example for our youngsters.

Estatua de Lautaro

Lautaro's  statue, done with the wood of a death tree, just in the middles of  Curico's Main Square. Leftaro - his namee in mapudungu- was the natives' master against the spaniards . Lautaro dead at Mataquito River at Curico's sea border.
